Silvio Calabi: Sport, utility, luxury and economy (sort of): Porsche’s Cayenne S Hybrid

Cayenne

Looking at the Cayenne now, it’s hard to remember why it caused such a fuss when it appeared, back in 2002. Porschephiles were livid because their brand had gone mainstream with a family hauler — an SUV! Then they ridiculed the Cayenne for everything from its name (pepper?) to its looks, which truly did fall somewhere on the backside of homely.

Greg Zyla: Rare Rambler Rebel

1966 Rebel

Q: Greg, my grandfather has a 1966 Rambler Rebel two-door hardtop. I’m wondering how much it is worth in fairly good condition. It has a 232-cubic-inch, 6-cylinder engine with automatic, power steering and brakes, and has about 110,000 miles on it. Thanks much. Colin L., Illinois.

Talking Cars: It’s not your mom’s Hyundai

Junior Damato

I was talking to my co-worker at lunch about a new sports coupe and he suggested I look at the 2013 Hyundai Genesis coupe 3.8 V-6. I asked him if was joking and he said absolutely not. So we both went to the dealer to take a look. To my surprise I sat in the car and did not believe it was a Hyundai. What can you tell me about the car? I plan on buying a new coupe this spring.

Greg Zyla: 1968 Ford XL GT convertible

1968 Ford Galaxie XL.jpg

Hi Greg, I enjoy reading your column, as I have been a car nut for over 40 years. What can you tell me about a 1968 Ford XL GT? My dad had one when I was 14 and I still remember it well.

Greg Zyla: Readers love Hudsons, too

1937 Hudson Terraplane ad.jpg

Greg, you incurred some of my best childhood memories when reading this history of the Hudson car company!

Greg Zyla: Studebaker Golden Hawk muscle car

1956 Golden Hawk ad.jpg

Q: I always wondered why the Studebaker Golden Hawk was never classified as a muscle car. Considering it was powered by a 374-cubic-inch Packard twin four-barrel engine that produced 310 horsepower and 400 pound-foot of torque. -- Sincerely, Fred Durbano, Canandaigua, N.Y.

Talking Cars: The good and the bad on E15 fuel

Junior Damato

I just bought a new Chevy HHR auto that takes the E15 fuel as well as gasoline. I have never used the E15 before, and what I’d like to know is the good and the bad on it.

Silvio Calabi: Back to the future with the Dodge Charger

dg012_075ch.jpg

Dodge Charger, 1969: Two-door hardtop with a choice of five V-8s or the 225-cubic-inch Slant Six, good for about 180 to 425 horsepower. Manual or automatic transmissions. Torsion-bar front suspension, leaf springs in the back. Overall length 17 feet, 4 inches on a 117-inch wheelbase. Weight about 3,700 pounds. The big-dog 500 Hemi cost about $4,600, which equates to $30,000 today, and sprinted from zero to 60 miles per hour in a couple ticks under six seconds. That got everyone’s attention, back in the day. So did the distinctive Coke-bottle body style, introduced a year earlier.

Greg Zyla: Those fabulous Hudson cars

Marshall Teague and daughter

My dad drove Hudsons his whole life, and I fondly remember many of his cars, especially the “grand daddy” of them all, his 1953 Super Wasp four-door sedan. How about a few words on these great motorcars?
